Anglo-Saxon Literature Was Composed Between The Years 650

Anglo-Saxon literature was composed between the years 650 and 1110. Beowulf is one of the most famous epics written during this time. It’s also known as the oldest surviving Germanic epic and the longest Old English poem. Most stories written during this time were about the deeds of warriors, heroic acts, and religion. Beowulf is a warrior from the Geats who is asked to come protect king Hrothgar from an attack by a sea monster named Grendel. All of these characters are men. There are very few epics from this time that put any focus on women’s issues. Beowulf is one of the few. The three most important were Wealhtheow, Grendel s Mother, and Hildeburh. Modthryth and Hygd are two more minor, but important characters. All the women together†¦show more content†¦Throughout the story, Hildeburh works to stay at peace with her homeland and her husband, King of the Jutes’, homeland. Wealhtheow is also a prime example of a peacemaker. She was important in estab lishing the status of the men that came in front of her husband, the King. This is a really big deal for a woman during this time. She holds a high political power in the mead hall. She gives them their status by sending around a mead cup; first to her husband, then she works her way down the line. When Beowulf first arrives she serves him last because he is new and hasn’t made his way up yet, but starting at line 1162, she serves Beowulf right after her husband showing that he has earned his spot next to the King because of his service to their land. She also plays a major role in deciding who is the heir to the throne. Her husband makes Beowulf the King, but only until his sons are old enough, per his wife’s request. She is the reinforcement of social norms or traditions. According to Christine Fell in her seminal study â€Å"Women in Anglo-Saxon England,† women were near equal companions to the males in their lives, such as husbands and brothers, much more th an in any other era before modern time (â€Å"Women in Anglo-Saxon Society,† 2017). Unlike the other female characters, Grendel’s mother is more of a masculine figure. She is not at all viewed as the other women are in the story.
